STEM Day at Whitcliffe Mount School

Year 8 students at Whitcliffe Mount got a better insight into how Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths can lead to careers with an interactive day designed just for them.

FOCUS: Help students explore STEM subjects in greater detail before they make their GCSE subject choices.

280 students from Whitcliffe Mount School in Cleckheaton got a fast-paced, interactive look at careers in the STEM sector with a carousel of workshops designed by local employers.

Business volunteers from 3M Buckley Innovation Centre, Burmatex, Laing O'Rourke, the Army, Northern Powergrid, PPG industries, Transpennine Express, Yorkshire Building Society and Paxman Coolers led a series of exciting and innovative workshops to help the students understand the range of careers available when you pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

Workshops included a paint product invention and budgeting challenge from PPG, applying Science to careers in the Army and a look at scalp cooling technology with Paxman Coolers.

Results

  • 97% of students said the day helped them better understand the careers available in the STEM sector and they were more informed about the importance of STEM subjects at school
  • 87% of students said the day raised awareness of their aspirations and skills
  • 93% of students said the day improved their understanding of how businesses in this sector work
