Made in Oxford

Young people from three schools in Oxford got an opportunity to hone their business and enterprise skills with a unique challenge from the brand-new Westgate Oxford shopping centre.

Made in Oxford

FOCUS: Raise aspirations and introduce enterprise skills to local young people as well as make them aware of the opportunities available in retail.

Students from St Gregory the Great Catholic School, City of Oxford College and Oxford Academy were asked to create their own pop-up retail concept to feature at Westgate Oxford and had to pitch their big ideas to a panel of five ‘dragons’ made up of representatives from the property company behind the shopping centre, Land Securities and The Crown Estate as well as Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (OxLEP).

Staff from Westgate Oxford mentored and coached the students involved over two months with 45 young people taking part in interactive workshops focused on marketing, costing and pricing to help them create their concept.

The winners of the #MadeinOxford competition were a group of nine Oxford Academy sixth form students with their 'Inside Oxford' concept, an innovative and creative hand crafted canvas tote bag design.

"We’re thrilled to be able to support this worthwhile initiative and to see the students embrace the challenge with such passion and enthusiasm. All three schools delivered compelling and well thought out concepts and business plans, all of which we could see working in the pop-up retail space we are providing at Westgate Oxford.”
